Mustard Seed Christmas Visit

The Smallest Things
Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.
– Matthew 17:20

A Christmas Visit – A Seed Planted

About a month back, a gentleman named John stopped by FGI headquarters to see what we were all about. He spoke with mentoring supervisor Kathy, and was especially moved by what she told him of the dedication of our mentors and stories of hope about how the love of Christ has impacted the children and families we serve. It turns out John had a big heart for struggling families…especially the kids. He stayed for about an hour and then left satisfied with the hospitality and information he had received. A seed was planted.

In Good Soil, the Seed Grows

John returned to the office just a week ago with his friend Roy. Roy had lost his young wife when they were only 36 and raised their two children as a single dad. After hearing about our mentoring work from John, he wanted to speak with Kathy in person. You see, because of his own hard journey as a single parent, Roy had a big heart for struggling families as well…especially single moms.

A Harvest of Love

John and Roy had a plan. They asked Kathy if there was a particular family among our many who could use a special blessing for Christmas. They were told about a family with a single mom, Carly, who was working several jobs to support her four children and her aging mother. Kathy relayed what a wonderful parenting job Carly has done to raise her two sons and two daughters. Carly made sure each child was matched with a Family Guidance mentor whose weekly visits she notes diligently on a chalk board calendar so her children don’t miss their visits. She has encouraged them to be good students and good kids in a world that doesn’t always expect that to be true of single-parent families.

Hands Reaching Out to Another – the Fruit of Love

John and Roy were both impressed and agreed that this was the family they were meant to bless. So they provided Kathy with enough money to anonymously purchase Christmas gifts for this awesome mom, her kids and their grandma!

When Kathy delivered the gifts, Carly met her at the door with tears in her eyes. She had just lost her job and didn’t know how they were going to have Christmas at all. Carly said she knew that God had provided these wonderful gifts for her family – those wrapped in pretty paper, and the gift of hearts filled with the love of God reaching out to bless another.
