Camp Director’s Desk – 2014

Promise Camp isn’t all fun and games!

Serious Business

But there are some high school aged kids for whom camp is also serious business. They serve as counselors or grounds and facilities crew. They learn, with the senior counselors, during their orientation how to work creatively, responsibly and safely and how to handle difficult situations that may arise, while also having fun and helping the campers to enjoy their time at Promise Camp.

Future Leaders of Integrity

There is another group of high school students who participate in our Outpost Leadership Development program. The Outpost students are mentored for two weeks in extensive experiential learning sessions to help them identify their leadership gifts and to develop them better. The top performers of that program are invited back to serve in a week of Practicum Training where they are placed in pseudo-staff positions and mentored in real-time work situations by older staff members. Not only that! Their academic performance is also evaluated. What?! And at the end of those two weeks, they go through an extensive interview process with our camp director. For some, this is their first real world experience with an interview but it is intended to help them to be better prepared for future employment.

A Friend in Jesus

But at the end of the day – or camping season – most of the kids, whether campers or staffers, will take home with them the memories of having a great time and making new friends while learning more about Jesus – their real BFF!
